Three Rivers Petroglyphs
Astronomical observation sites in the Tularosa Basin encompass the entire spectrum of activities. The earliest archaeoastronomy observation sites in the state have been discovered in the Sacramento Mountains. Nearby prehistoric petroglyphs at the Three Rivers site graphically detail the views of ancient man, to include thoughts on celestial activities, such as stars, moons, and galactic designs. This is not surprising, since the skies above Southern New Mexico are pristine for stargazing, a fact noted by ancient sky gazers on through to present day astronomers (and the occasional intelligence collection organizations).
